Abstract

Dexamethasone is 9α-fluoro-llβ,17α,21-trihydroxy-16α-methylpregna-1,4-diene-3,2O-dione. Other names for the compound include 9α-fluoro-16α-methylprednisolone and 16α-methyl-9α-fluoroprednisolone. Dexamethasone is a white to yellowish-white, odorless, crystalline powder. Dexamethasone is a drug commonly used in anesthesia for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and is used as an adjuvant to peripheral nerve block, since it has shown to prolong duration of sensory block with either perineural or intravenous administration.
